BARRIER ISLANDS FREE MEDICAL CLINIC

internship and nonprofit leadership practicum

My experience as a volunteer intern with the Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic during my nonprofit leadership practicum was incredibly rewarding. As part of my role, I spearheaded outreach initiatives aimed at boosting all aspects of care for over 1000 patients who did not have health insurance. This involved developing and implementing strategic initiatives to increase awareness, accessibility, and utilization of the clinic's services.

In addition, I had the opportunity to present my capstone project on trends in nonprofit clinic management to the clinic's board and staff members. This allowed me to showcase my research, analysis, and presentation skills while contributing valuable insights to the organization's operations.

Furthermore, I actively participated in grant writing efforts and successfully secured $10,000 in funding for the clinic through my grant proposals. These funds were used to support critical needs such as medical supplies, nurses' salaries, and outreach efforts, helping the clinic continue its mission of providing free healthcare to those in need.

This internship provided me with practical experience in nonprofit leadership, strategic planning, grant writing, and healthcare management. It solidified my commitment to making a positive impact in the community through healthcare advocacy and nonprofit work, and has been a formative experience in shaping my career aspirations in the healthcare field.

CLEMSON EXTENSION RURAL HEALTH AND NUTRITION

internship and work experience

Working with a diabetes prevention program during my college years was a truly rewarding experience that left a lasting impact on me. As part of my role, I was responsible for regular health communication, registering participants for Type II diabetes lifestyle change and education programs, and providing ongoing support to participants by answering their questions and engaging them with weekly follow-ups.

One of the highlights of my job was working with the Spanish program within the diabetes prevention program. This experience allowed me to apply my language skills and cultural understanding to connect with Spanish-speaking participants and provide them with the necessary information and support in their native language. I found joy in building rapport with the participants, understanding their unique perspectives, and helping them navigate the challenges of preventing diabetes through lifestyle changes.

In addition to my direct interactions with participants, I also assisted in data management by entering weekly biometric data in REDCap, a research electronic data capture tool. This allowed me to gain valuable experience in data collection and management, as well as an understanding of the importance of accurate data for research purposes.

Furthermore, I was involved in research development by conducting literature reviews and writing articles on strategies to improve nutrition, exercise, and stress management. This allowed me to contribute to the program's knowledge base and stay up-to-date with the latest research in diabetes prevention and lifestyle interventions.

Working with the diabetes prevention program not only honed my communication and data management skills, but also deepened my understanding of the challenges and importance of preventing Type II diabetes. It was a privilege to be a part of a team that made a positive impact on participants' lives by promoting healthy lifestyle choices and providing support on their journey toward better health.

Reflecting on my experience with the diabetes prevention program, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of others and apply my skills in a meaningful way. It reinforced my passion for health promotion and the importance of culturally sensitive approaches to healthcare. This experience has enriched my understanding of chronic disease prevention and has left a lasting impression on my career aspirations in the healthcare field.
